Colleen received her MD in May 2017 from Michigan State University College of Human Medicine, where she was selected for Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) and the Gold Humanism Honor Society. She earned Bachelor of Science degrees in physiology and psychology from Michigan State University and was a member of Lyman Briggs College. Colleen was awarded a Professorial Assistantship scholarship to conduct research on bone mineralization and diabetes during this time, and was an active member of the volunteer organization Alternative Spartan Breaks. During medical school, she was secretary of Education Transforming Community Health, a student organization that taught health lessons to residents of a youth shelter. She completed training to become a member of the Sexual Assault Crisis Intervention team and become a medical advocate, responding to provide resources and support to survivors of sexual assault. Colleen completed the Leadership in Medicine for the Underserved certificate program, which enables students to lead efforts to address the needs of medically underserved populations. She volunteered at a residential school for children in the foster care system and organized a new running club for them to train for a charity 5k race. She also completed qualitative research on nutrition interventions as a follow-up to the Flint Water Crisis
