Maya was born and raised in New Bedford, Massachusetts. She attended Northeastern University in Boston, MA for her undergraduate degree where she studied Health Sciences. In college she found her interest in working with young children as she spent time working in newborn nurseries, as well as her experiences working with kids who had developmental delays/disabilities. She attended medical school at Howard University in Washington, D.C. where she was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Society and the Gold Humanism Honor Society. She has interests in pediatric community health, as well as mentoring and the enhancement of underrepresented minorities in medicine. She chose Brown for the strong sense of community within the residents, and the warmth and support from the program leadership. She in particular is excited to be returning closer to home and to be working with diverse patients from Rhode Island, in particular the Cape Verdean community of which her family is from. Outside of work she likes to dance, explore new restaurants, bake, and travel.
